A 73-year-old Buckeye man whose bicycle had a flat tire in the desert died Sunday while walking to a fire station where he was supposed to meet his wife for a ride home, police said.
Heat may have caused James Van de Voorde’s death, Buckeye authorities said.
Police received a call about 1:45 p.m. July 16 from a woman who said her husband went for a bike ride in the Sun City Festival area but had not arrived at the fire station on Wagner Complex Drive where the two agreed to meet.
She said Van de Voorde had called her earlier, saying his bike had a flat tire in a desert area west of the fire station and that he was attempting to walk to the meeting point.
Police and fire crews found the man’s body in the desert. Officials said the Medical Examiner’s Office will determine if the death was related to the heat.
