Heap calls Supreme Court decision ‘vindication’ in first public remarks on election case

Maricopa County Recorder says he expects legal fight with supervisors to wind down as officials prepare for Arizona’s next major election.

Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap publicly celebrated what he called a “big win” in his long-running legal dispute with the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, telling supporters July 11 the Arizona Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling validates his office’s authority as the county prepares for another closely watched election.

Speaking at the Sun City West Republican Club meeting at Church on the Green, Heap said the July 7 decision delivered “vindication” after more than a year of litigation over election administration and funding. The Arizona Supreme Court unanimously lifted a stay imposed by the Court of Appeals, reinstating a lower court order that sided with Heap in the dispute.

“I think this is over in terms of a legal case,” Heap said, adding the high court had effectively signaled any future appeal would be resolved.
