The sixth measles case of the year has been confirmed with public exposure taking place at an  Arizona Youth Sports Basketball game in Mesa.

The exposure at a gymnasium at 6915 E. Guadalupe Road occurred between 2-5 p.m. Saturday, April 11, according to the Maricopa County Public Health Department. The last day to watch for symptoms is Saturday, May 2.

Public health officials said the case is not linked to recent exposure locations in Queen Creek.

Measles is a highly infectious virus that can linger in the air for up to two hours, and approximately 90% of unvaccinated individuals who are exposed to measles will become infected, health officials said. Babies under 6 months of age should especially be monitored at they are too young to receive the vaccine.

Symptoms typically appear seven to 12 days after exposure but may take up to 21 days. Symptoms include:

• High fever (101 degrees or higher)
• Red, watery eyes
• Cough
• Runny nose
• A rash that is red, raised and blotchy

The rash begins after other symptoms, usually on the face at the hairline, and moves down the body.
