The Exchange Club of Tempe presents its Healing Field tribute at Tempe Beach Park from Sept. 7 through Wednesday, Sept. 11, in memory of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
Healing Field is a memorial that reflects on the tragedy of that day and pays tribute to the nearly 3,000 innocent lives that were lost, according to a city release. Thousands of American flags are placed throughout Tempe Beach Park, representing the victims from that day.
Every year, members of the community dedicate hundreds of hours to this grassroots effort to assemble and place the flags.
Volunteers set up the flags the morning of Sept. 7 before the Freedom Concert of patriotic songs later that evening. The annual Tunnel to Towers Foundation 5K run/walk also took place on Sept. 8.
“It's a moving display and a reminder that we will never forget the tragic events of that day,” the city release stated.
With more to come, there will be a Healing Field Tribute on Sept. 11 at 5:45 a.m. There will be a reading of the names of the victims beginning at 5:46 a.m. when the first plane hit the first tower, according to the release.
Later in the day, there will be another Healing Field Tribute at 7 p.m. that will feature a ceremony, speakers and a candlelight vigil.
Volunteers will gather at 6 a.m. on Sept. 12 to take down the flags, and all are welcome, the release noted.
