LITHIUM-ION BATTERY

Hazmat crews monitor fire at Scottsdale waste transfer facility

Scottsdale hazmat crews were at the city’s solid waste transfer facility near Loop 101 and Hayden Road late Saturday night monitoring a fire that involved a lithium-ion battery, authorities said.

Firefighters responded about 7:20 p.m. Aug. 15 to black smoke coming from a building at the facility. They found a fire and upgraded the incident to a first-alarm hazardous materials response, according to a Scottsdale Fire Department release.

A department spokesman said a lithium-ion battery was in the trash, requiring crews to retreat as fumes from the batteries are toxic.
