Phoenix police detectives continue to investigate an accidental shooting that left a teenager dead and his mother facing criminal charges, authorities said Wedneseday when they identified the victim as 14-year-old Jeremiah Ricci.

The shooting occurred 10:45 p.m. Aug. 10. Officers responded to a motel near 27th Avenue and Union Hills Drive and found the teenage boy with an apparent gunshot wound.

Phoenix Fire Department personnel arrived and pronounced the boy dead.

“Officers detained multiple people inside the motel room and learned that the victim’s mother, 40-year-old Jewell Griffen, left the area shortly after police arrived. She later returned to the scene and was taken into custody,” a Phoenix Police Department release stated.

Homicide detectives processed the scene and spoke to witnesses, learning the victim and his teenage brother were allowed by Griffen to handle a firearm while inside their motel room, police said.

“A few moments later, the firearm discharged, resulting in one of the boys being struck,” the release stated.

Griffen was booked on multiple charges including child abuse.

Further charging decisions will be made after the investigation is complete, police said.
