Groups aim to provide more support, services for adults with autism

Autistic services for adults are limited, especially if they don’t receive a diagnosis until later in adulthood. But some local groups are aiming to do more to help.

Many support services, especially from the government, ends at age 21 because it’s built into the education system, added American Autism Association Executive Director Eliane Abou-Assi.

“We’ve tried to expand the resources specific for adults on our website at the American Autism Association,” Abou-Assi said. “We also have an autism hotline. People contact us from all over the country asking us questions. We have so many people later in life reaching out. And so that led us to expand the information and resources on our website so that we have somewhere to refer them.”
