Grieving Millennium girls basketball wins gritty Open game

Tigers play for fallen classmate, beat Seton 44-42

CHANDLER - Three days later they played - and won - for Gabe.

Millennium's girls basketball team played its Open Division game at Chandler Seton Catholic Monday, three days after it was planned. At 1:27 a.m. Friday Gabryan Aguirre, a 17-year-old senior, died in a rollover accident.

Aguirre played football for the Tigers and was beloved by the girls basketball team and a large portion of the Goodyear school. Millennium coach Danny Soliman reached out to the Arizona Interscholastic Association and Seton coack Karen Self to ask about postponing the game, and the coaches and the AIA agreed to move the quarterfinal to Monday afternoon.
