Grant to help Glendale firefighters battle cancer risk

Department will offer screenings, treatment to every firefighter

Facing a “perfect storm” of factors leading to an alarming cancer rate among firefighters, the Glendale Fire Department is aggressively tackling the issue.

Glendale Fire announced Feb. 8 a FEMA-Assistance to Firefighter Grant for just more than $1 million to promote early detection and treatment in a battle that uniquely impacts the firefighting community.

Cancer is the leading cause of death for firefighters.
