Gov. Kati Hobbs vetoed on Monday a bill that limits cities’ planning and zoning powers.
House Bill 2570 would have eliminated minimum lot sizes and setback requirements as well as stopped cities from setting minimum sizes for homes and block limits on yard sizes for cities with populations greater than 50,000. It also would have blocked those cities from mandating aesthetic qualities to homes and eliminated homeowners associations.
The bill was designed to ease local restrictions to home building, which legislators say are limiting the number of new homes being built and keeping the price of homes out of reach of many would be homeowners, but Hobbs said it over stepped its bounds.
