West Valley city's camera database safety plan draws mix of praise, privacy concerns

The Goodyear Police Department has launched a new voluntary program aimed at accelerating criminal investigations by asking residents and business owners to register their outdoor security cameras.

The initiative, known as Virtual Block Watch, establishes what officials called a secure database that maps the locations of participating security systems across the city. When a crime occurs, investigators can check the map to identify nearby cameras and contact property owners to request relevant footage.

Police officials emphasized the department will not have direct access to live camera feeds or stored recordings.
