The city of Goodyear’s public works department received the 2023 Safety Award for Workplace Wellness by the Solid Waste Association of North America.
The award recognizes its continued focus on wellness programming, including the pre-work conditioning program staff initiated seven years ago. This particular program has been instrumental in reducing injuries and ensuring personnel remain fit for their duties, a press release explains.
“By effectively implementing our comprehensive safety, health and wellness programs, we have reduced health risks and enhanced the overall quality of life for our workforce,” Goodyear Public Works Director Sumeet Mohan stated.

Each year, fewer injuries have been reported since starting the wellness programing. The solid waste team has dropped from 10 injuries in 2016 down to zero.
The Arizona Department of Occupational Safety and Health Administration has also recognized the city as a Star site in its Voluntary Protection Program. VPP is the highest level of recognition a workplace can achieve for safety and health excellence, and Star status is the highest level of recognition within the program.
