The city of Goodyear notified residents May 21 of a violation of federal drinking water standards following recent testing for disinfection byproducts.
According to a public notice issued by the city, the municipal water system recently exceeded the maximum contaminant level for total trihalomethanes. While officials emphasized the situation is not an emergency and did not require residents to boil their water, the city is required by law to inform the public of the findings.
Total trihalomethanes are a group of four volatile organic chemicals that form when disinfectants, such as chlorine, react with natural organic matter present in the water.
