Goodyear police warn of scammers impersonating law enforcement

The Goodyear Police Department is receiving reports of unknown people committing fraud by falsely representing themselves via telephone as members of law enforcement.

In a Facebook post, Goodyear police said the caller identifies him or herself as an officer or deputy — and may use a real officer’s name from a local law enforcement agency.

The caller then threatens the victim with arrest if they do not pay a certain amount of money by purchasing various retailer or Visa gift cards, police stated. The victims receive a phone number to call once the cards are purchased, and then they are “transferred” to make the payment, making the call appear legitimate.

Contact the Goodyear Police Department at 623-932-1220 if you receive a suspicious call of this nature.

As a reminder, Goodyear police and other departments will never call and ask for any type of payment or personal information over the phone.
