Goodyear police suspend bean bag shotgun program

Faulty rounds found to cause "unintended serious injury"

Goodyear police officers are among Valley departments pausing the use of bean bag rounds “out of an abundance of caution” when they realized the so-called less lethal munitions could cause “unintended serious injury.”

Several Valley police departments, including Phoenix, made the decision to suspend their bean bag shotgun programs after finding that powder in issued rounds acted inconsistently when fired, and “could double the intended feet per second velocity,” Goodyear Deputy Police Chief Jeff Mery said in a recent directive.
