Glendale Woman’s Club teams with Dolly Parton on books for kids initiative

Studies show kids reading improves cognitive performance, mental well-being, brain structure

Kids in Glendale are finally part of an international reading initiative through Dolly Parton’s foundation to get free books into the hands of anyone 5 years or younger.

The singing superstar started her Imagination Library in 1995 for U.S. kids whose parents register for the program to have one book a month delivered to their door from birth to age 5. Today, her program spans five countries and gifts more than 2 million free books each month to children around the world.

The Glendale Woman’s Club has led the effort locally. Club President Cheryl Kappes says there are 20,665 kids in Glendale between those ages eligible to register.
