Glendale union calls cancer classification for firefighters ‘vindication’

Researchers, including from U-of-A, provide evidence that occupational exposure as a firefighter causes cancer

The International Agency for Research on Cancer classified occupational exposure as a firefighter as carcinogenic, changing the previous classification of possibly carcinogenic, the University of Arizona Health Sciences announced Wednesday.

The reclassification came after many new studies, including several led by the UArizona Health Sciences in collaboration with the Tucson Fire Department, supplied evidence that occupational exposure as a firefighter causes cancer.

Firefighters, including in Glendale, have experienced struggles in trying to have municipalities support a link to firefighting and cancer.
