Glendale set to open wait lists for public housing, choice vouchers

Posted

The Glendale Housing Authority will begin accepting pre-applications to establish waiting lists for its Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher Programs beginning Monday, July 12.

The pre-application process will remain open through Monday, Aug. 2.

Glendale offers two long-term housing solutions for income-eligible households. The Housing Choice Voucher program provides a voucher to eligible households to help them afford rent. This program allows recipients to choose where they want to live, as long as it’s within Glendale’s service area and follows voucher guidelines.

The second program is conventional public housing. It includes 155 apartments the city owns and operates in three communities.

Only one pre-application per household, per program will be accepted, however, households may submit interest for one or both programs at the same time. 350 pre-applications will be drawn for each waiting list.

It is possible for one household to be included on both waiting lists if they are selected during the lottery process. Those selected will make up the waiting list until the next pre-application process takes place.

The city of Glendale has identified the following individual/household characteristics for priority placement if selected to be on either waiting list:

  • Living, working or last permanent residence in Glendale.
  • Employed, elderly (62 or older), disabled or military (active duty or veteran).
  • Currently homeless or at risk of homelessness.
  • Domestic violence crime victim (assault, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, etc.).
  • Displaced by government action or disaster.

To help with the process the city will provide the following ways to apply:

  • Online with a personal device at glendaleaz.com/housing.
  • Online at Glendale Public Libraries, staff is prepared to provide technical assistance and libraries are open seven days a week. Visit glendaleazlibrary.com for hours and locations.
  • Paper pre-applications can be picked up at the Glendale Housing Authority Administration building at 6842 N. 61st Ave.
  • To request a paper pre-application be mailed to you, call 623-930-3708.
  • To fill out a pre-application with a representative over the phone, call 623-930-3708.

Persons with disabilities that will need assistance may call in advance of the application opening to request assistance at 623-930-3708, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, (excluding city holidays). The deadline to request application assistance is 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2.

All applicants will be notified of the results of the lottery drawing. If an applicant is selected in the lottery and placed on the waiting list, they’ll be given a telephone number to call to check their status.
