HOUSING

Glendale seniors among those struggling with affordable housing

Nonprofit Glencroft works with federal dollars to provide a place to call home

Jo Harris has lived in Arizona more than 50 years. Her last two, though, have been uniquely tough.

She endured five surgeries in one year, all of which kept her in recovery mode for eight months. Dealing with medical issues is daunting enough, especially when living alone. Add to that the need to find — in her situation — affordable housing.

Consider that in March of this year, Apartment List’s Rent Reports, which analyzed and ranked the top 20 cities in the U.S. for highest rent hikes, featured six in Arizona, including two in the top five. Among those cities with the fastest rent growth from January 2021 to January 2022, Glendale, with a spike of 27.5%, ranks ninth nationally over one year. Mesa (#5), Phoenix (#8), Chandler (#14) and Gilbert (#15) also made their way to the top 20.
