15-year-old charged for July 4 shootings at Westgate in Glendale

5 injured, treated and released

Glendale Police arrested a 15-year-old boy from Phoenix July 4 for starting a shooting around 9 p.m. that night at Westgate Entertainment District that injured five other youth, including his younger sister.

According to the police report, the boy was walking with his mother and siblings in the area near Bar Louie when he and his brother saw another group of teens they knew and turned toward them. In surveillance video, an adult man and the boy’s mother are observed trying to stop him and get him to back away.

The 15-year-old turned away but quickly turned back and reached for some money in his pocket to show off to the other teens. He and one of the boys started to fight, and his brother and the other members of the group joined in the fight. The boy who started the altercation pulled out a 9 mm and began shooting, according to police.
