Online packages are on their way to front porches all over town this time of year, and more than just the homeowners’ eyes may be on them.
A new study out by industry tracker C+R Research reveals that of 2,000 consumers who self-reported as having shopped online to have packages delivered to their doors, almost one-quarter said they have been the victim of package theft so far this year. Even if you haven’t had a package swiped, chance are you know someone who has. The study also showed that 60% of people know someone who has had a package stolen during the holiday season.
The Glendale Police Department doesn’t track “porch pirates” per se, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly those instances, but such charges generally fall under “theft,” GPD Sgt. Randy Stewart explained. He notes that there hasn’t been a particular uptick in these types of calls for service of late, but he did add that there were almost half a dozen reports made of stolen packages in Glendale between Nov. 25 and Dec. 5.
