Glendale Police detectives arrested the homicide suspect in the murder of 62-year-old Judy Ann Lopez last week.
The suspect, identified as James Marshaun Christopher Weekly, 27, was arrested May 29. He faces one count of second-degree murder, according to a press release from Glendale Police.
Glendale Police received numerous calls of a woman with an apparent stab wound just after 9 p.m. April 28 at the intersection of 83rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road, according to police.
Upon police arrival, they located Lopez, unconscious and unable to provide a statement. Multiple individuals had stopped to provide help and call police. Lopez was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police
Homicide detectives took over the investigation. As the night progressed, detectives were unable to find video surveillance of the incident, nor were they able to locate witnesses. No cutting instruments were found at the scene, according to police.
Detectives obtained security video from the bus that Lopez had been riding. The video showed she exited the bus at 8:57 p.m., along with two other men, according to police.
One of those men, later identified to be the suspect, was Weekly, according to police.
When Lopez got off the bus, she is seen with a cell phone in her hand. This cell phone was not recovered at the scene, according to police.
Detectives obtained cellphone records for Lopez’s phone and learned the phone was repeatedly turned on and off after the murder. The phone was traced to a neighborhood to the west of the incident, where it remained, according to police.
Detectives conducted surveillance in this area and were able to find surveillance video of Weekly walking through the neighborhood after the homicide in the same area the phone was traced to, further indicating Weekly was in possession of Lopez’s phone after the homicide, according to police.
On May 29, detectives served a search warrant at Weekly’s residence. Weekly was taken into custody and the search of his home resulted in recovering the same clothing he wore the night of the murder as well as a cell phone broken in half, matching Lopez’s cell phone, according to police.
During a interview in which he was read his Miranda rights, Weekly admitted to being on the same bus as Lopez, and later admitted to stabbing her in the neck with a metal pen once they got off the bus. Additionally, James said he took Judy’s cell phone after stabbing her, according to police.
