Glendale Police arrest stabbing suspect

Posted

At around 1 a.m. June 24, Glendale Police received reports of a stabbing in the 6600 block of West Glendale Avenue.

Officers arrived and began investigating the incident, resulting in violent crime unit detectives taking over the case.  The victim is expected to survive their injuries.

Police arrested Robert Cheatham, 24, later on June 24. He has been charged with aggravated assault.

According to the report, soon after the police arrived on  the scene they noticed a blood trail in a nearby apartment. They spoke to the apartment's owner, who said the suspect and his victim were living in his apartment.

From his bedroom, the apartment owner heard the two men arguing and yelled for them to stop. According to the report, the argument then escalated and he heard screaming.

The apartment owner then discovered the victim with multiple stab wounds and noticed the suspect had fled.

According to the report, police found a cell phone that included an image of the suspect, which was confirmed by the apartment owner.

The afternoon of June 24, police observed a man matching the suspect's description returning to the apartment complex and going to a third floor unit.

He did not exit for a while, according to the report. He left at 1:55 p.m. and was apprehended. Police said he made a spontaneous statement that the stabbing was in self defense after the victim lunged at him with a knife.

Cheatham had a large black and silver pocket knife in his possession when arrested. Accoding to the report, he told police the victim had punched him several times, but then changed his story when police said they did not notice any injuries.
