Glendale nixes chocolate festival due to COVID safety protocols

Chocolate Experience had been slated for 26th edition in February

Last year the annual Chocolate Affaire -- a Glendale staple since 1996 -- was pared down in size because of a cut in its budget. This year, the event will be canceled because of coronavirus.

Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps at the Dec. 8 city council workshop announced the growing number of coronavirus cases across Maricopa County and in Glendale will force the city to suspend this year’s event, scheduled for February, out of safety concerns.

“After looking at current numbers that are happening through the CDC regarding the number of new cases and some of the trend lines, we’ve decided to cancel the Chocolate Experience for this year,” Mr. Phelps announced. “For the amount of people that would normally come to this, and the amount of space we have to spread them out, you’d almost have to artificially keep the event down to a couple hundred people. That kind of negates the purpose for doing the event.”
