Glendale merchants respond to mayor’s claim that downtown ‘hanging by a thread’

Reinvestment project continues to bring differing perspectives

There hasn’t been a lot on which Glendale’s city hall and the city’s downtown merchants have seen eye to eye lately. Another surfaced this week.

During an already quarrelsome discussion on the upcoming Downtown Campus Reinvestment Project inside council chambers Tuesday, Mayor Jerry Weiers offered a bleak perspective on the 0.2 square miles that makes up Historic Downtown Glendale.

Downtown is a mix of Old Towne’s brick-trimmed sidewalks and eateries, antique shops and specialty stores; Catlin Court and its boutiques and mid-century bungalows; and city-owned assets including city hall, the Velma Teague Library and Murphy Park, all spanning 10 square blocks.
