Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers, 63, was admitted to a local hospital on Monday and in consultation with his doctors he is scheduled to undergo bypass heart surgery on Thursday, Feb. 4.
The city announced the news Feb. 3.
“I appreciate all of the heartfelt messages from everyone offering their thoughts and prayers and for their willingness to assist Sandy and I during this time,” Mayor Weiers said in a released statement. “I have witnessed firsthand the conditions our healthcare workers are working in due to the pandemic, and I can’t thank them enough for their dedication and commitment to our communities.”
City Manager Kevin Phelps and the Mayor’s staff have been in regular communication with Mr. Weiers since he went to the Urgent Care facility, and per the city charter, Vice Mayor Ian Hugh was notified of all updates, to ensure city government operations continue uninterrupted.
Earlier on Monday, Mr. Weiers visited his local Glendale Urgent Care where professionals evaluated his health concerns and determined he needed to be transported to a hospital. After several hours of searching and waiting, a hospital that has both the necessary resources to help him, as well as the capacity to accept him was located.
Mayor Weiers reiterated his request to the public to keep everyone safe.
“Since I first issued my emergency proclamation due to COVID-19, I have emphasized nonstop the importance of wearing face coverings, practicing social distancing and getting vaccinated, when it becomes available to you,” he stated. “I continue to stress how these simple and easy efforts allow our hospitals to focus on providing necessary medical care to those that need it, when they need it.”
The mayor was re-elected to a third, four-year term in August and was sworn in virtually on Dec. 8. He is expected to make a full recovery.
In 2021, Mr. Weiers celebrates 35 years as a cancer survivor.
