Glendale mayor proposes property tax hike

City bracing for costs from potential new law; Council will discuss further

Glendale residents on Friday will start to see notices of a potential property tax rate increase -- but the rate may not actually go up.

The discussion came in the last 20 minutes of the City Council’s nearly four-hour workshop April 8 dedicated to the city’s budget. Mayor Jerry Weiers broached the idea of the Council exercising its constitutional right to unilaterally raise the city’s property tax by 2 percent without a public vote in order to offset an expected increase in claims and costs to the city’s workers’ compensation funds.
