Glendale honors Hispanic Heritage Month with several events

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, and Glendale will play host to several events at its libraries and at the Glendale Community Center in honor.

Experiences around the city include:

• Author Storytime: Local author Felicia Cocotzin Ruiz will read her children’s book, “Nana Lupita and the Magic Sopita” at this family-friendly event from 11 a.m. to noon Sept. 12 at Heroes Regional Park Library, 6075 N. 83rd Ave. There will be kids’ crafts activities and a chance to walk around the lake at the park.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, and Glendale will play host to several events at its libraries and at the Glendale Community Center in honor.

Experiences around the city include:

• Author Storytime: Local author Felicia Cocotzin Ruiz will read her children’s book, “Nana Lupita and the Magic Sopita” at this family-friendly event from 11 a.m. to noon Sept. 12 at Heroes Regional Park Library, 6075 N. 83rd Ave. There will be kids’ crafts activities and a chance to walk around the lake at the park.

• Live at the Library: Mariachi Pasión: The Valley’s premier all-female mariachi band, Mariachi Pasión, will perform from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Glendale Main Library, 5959 W. Brown St. This award-winning group is known for its energy and love of mariachi music.

• Viva La Fiesta: Thess celebrations will feature flavorful snacks, music, cultural performances, a presentation on Hispanic history and a game of lotería from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 15-19 in the Glendale Community Center, 5401 W. Ocotillo Road. While the event is free and open to the public, anyone who wants to attend is encouraged to register at this Parks and Recreation Department registration page. • Kids Crafternoon at Foothills. Participants learn to make colorful tissue paper flowers and papel picado banners from 4 to 5 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Foothills Library, 19055 N. 57th Ave. Papel picado is a traditional Mexican decorative craft created by cutting elaborate designs into sheets of tissue paper. This event is geared towards children ages 6 to 8. Registration is required and can be done starting at 2 p.m. Sept. 12 at this webpage.

• Día de Muertos Nicho Boxes: Participants ages 12 to 18 will make nicho boxes, which are a folk art popular throughout Central and South America, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Main Library. Attendees should bring photos and objects from home, while the library will provide the materials to make the boxes. Registration is required and starts at 6 p.m. on Oct. 9 at this webpage.

• Dia de Muertos/Day of the Dead Community Altar: Contribute to the altar from Oct. 20 to Nov. 4 at the Main Library. Dia de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican and Mexican-American observance that celebrates the spirits of dearly departed people. Honor the memory of loved ones with the community ofrenda or altar. Add photographs, messages and symbolic items to the ofrenda.
