Glendale frets about hotel, event center ballot measure

If Proposition 499 passes, event center, hotel workers earn at least $20 an hour

The city of Glendale will not officially oppose Proposition 499, which would require new record-keeping requirements from a new city department and a mandated minimum wage of an $20 our for hotel and event center workers.

But a conversation with city leaders reveals a laundry list of concerns.

City Manager Kevin Phelps said the focus of initial reads of the general election ballot measure focused on the more than $5 an hour minimum wage increase and its ripple effects on Glendale’s entertainment district destinations and hotels. Future exploration, however, revealed the cost to set up a department of labor standards and its regulatory duties could be a bigger burden for the city.
