There were no injuries after Glendale Fire Department crews successfully battled a fire at a closed business on a hot Sunday afternoon.
Just after 3:30 p.m., a motorist alerted 911 when they saw a black column of smoke on the east side of a vacant Dollar General store that was closed at the time.
The fire was on the exterior, and by the trash compactor that was connected to the building and also a homeless camp inside the fenced-off area, according to Glendale Fire. The fire was in the homeless camp and hitting the building with significant flames, investigators say.
Firefighters arrived within minutes, gained access to the side of the building and began knocking down the fire. Crews checked on the roof, the other side of the building, and gained access to the interior to see if the fire made it into the building. The quick fire attack prevented any interior damage from fire but did have some residual smoke inside and a sprinkler system activated.
Firefighters were able to shut off the sprinklers and blow out the smoke.
The fire is under investigation. No civilians were around and no firefighters were injured.
The building will be turned over to the owner of the store, firefighters say.
The afternoon blaze came at the hottest part of the day when temperatures were at 106 degrees.
