Glendale extends recycling contract after debate

Waste Management will handle services in 2024

Glendale City Council members pulled an item from the Jan. 9 consent agenda that would have renewed the city’s recycling contract with Waste Management.

After discussions about why the service was more expensive than initially reported and if two East Valley transfer stations added to the contract would cost the city more in transportation fees, the council voted 6-1 to renew the contract for 2024. Council member Bart Turner was the lone vote against.

The five-year contract began in 2023 and caps the city’s expenses at $1.25 million per year but Glendale has the option to renew or cancel the contract entering each calendar year.
