Glendale councilmember wants to eliminate food sales tax

Workshop for discussion next month

If one city councilmember has his way, Glendale will become only the second West Valley community to eliminate sales tax on food for home consumption.

Vice Mayor Jamie Aldama submitted a special item for discussion on the topic for Tuesday’s council workshop this week, but had to postpone it himself when a conflict arose over the meeting time. It’s rescheduled for the Dec. 13 workshop, and that won’t be the first time he’s tried to gain support for the effort.

Aldama says he’s pitched it as an item for discussion multiple times over the past few years. And the idea of either reducing the tax incrementally from its current 2.5% rate or eliminating it completely has yet to reach the council consensus needed to move the idea forward to explore ways to make it happen. Aldama has represented the Ocotillo District since 2014.
