Glendale councilman’s reversal gives Velma Teague reprieve

Council pulls money for building's demolition out of contract

Though the Glendale City Council did not completely reverse course on the future of the current Velma Teague Library building Jan. 14, it did put the brakes on a rapidly moving plan to demolish that building.

By a 5-2 margin at its Dec. 10 workshop, with the consent of now-former council members Joyce Clark and Ian Hugh, the council agreed to advance two contracts that would include money for the demolition for the current Velma Teague building to a vote in a future council meeting.

The library is in the Ocotillo District and that district’s council member, Leandro Baldenegro, had supported the demolition of the current Velma Teague building and moving the library to the Promenade on Palmaire. His change of heart was the catalyst of the council voting to take money to demolish the library building out of downtown construction contracts it approved with Holly Street Studios and Okland Construction Company.
