Glendale council reaches consensus to move Velma Teague Library

Resident petition opposed to leaving Murphy Park grows

Despite a vocal group of residents in opposition, the Glendale City Council on Tuesday reached a consensus - by a 5-2 margin - to proceed with a plan to move the Velma Teague Library out of Murphy Park and a block north to the Promenade on Palmaire.

Mayor Jerry Weiers and councilors Leandro Baldenegro, Joyce Clark, Ian Hugh and Ray Malnar agreed with this option, the fourth of four presented, to demolish the current library building, which was built around 1971, and relocate to the Promenade for an estimated $7.89 million total during the Oct. 22 work session.

Staff will proceed with plans along these lines for the library and park but a final council vote of approval is needed.
