For the first time, high school girls will be playing football for their schools in an AIA season.
This fall, girls will hit the gridiron at 55 Arizona high schools. About half are completely new to the sport. Most of the schools that played flag football as a club sport only have — at most — a two-year head start, meaning the best teams are anybody’s guess.
“A lot of my girls are basketball players. But this summer we got a lot of soccer girls who couldn’t play last spring. They are great and already have great footwork,” Millennium flag football coach Jermaine Austin said.
