The Gilbert Town Council voted May 19 to create a Veteran and Military Advisory Board.

Council Member Bill Spence, a former U.S. Navy lieutenant commander, will serve as the council liaison.

The board will work on veterans initiatives and programs of interest to the town. It will include subcommittees on specific topics.

Council also approved $5,000 from the general contingency fund to support the board.

Council voted 6-0 for approval of both items with Council Member Jared Taylor absent.

The town will accept applications for board positions May 21-31 through a page on the town website.

In a short meeting, Mayor Jenn Daniels also proclaimed May as Mental Health Awareness month and showed a video produced by the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee in conjunction with it.
