A Gilbert student is one of five national finalists to have their artwork placed in the Google "Doodle."
Sadra Rajaee was the winner in the kindergarten through third-grade category and was listed as a finalist for the grand prize in the 13th annual competition.
Sadra and the other four finalists each will receive a $5,000 college scholarship along with Google hardware and other items. Whichever of the finalists is chosen to win will have their artwork featured on the search engine site for 24 hours and win a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology package for their school.
Google's Doodle is the design of its home page icon that has been used to highlight a number of people and historic events among other things.
This year's contest included thousands of submissions and 54 state and U.S. territory winners were chosen. Voting then narrowed it down to the finalists.
"Our finalists were chosen based on a combination of public voting and our judging criteria, including artistic merit, creativity and how well participants communicated the theme in their artwork and written statement. We’re supremely grateful to each of these artists for trusting us with their inspiring stories of inner strength," said Perla Campos, global marketing lead for Google Doodles, in a blog post.
The final stage will have a judging panel decide which of the artworks is the winner.
