A woman died after being shot Tuesday at an extended stay motel in Gilbert, and a suspect was arrested 30 minutes after barricading himself in a room, police said.

Authorities received calls reporting gunshots were fired shortly before 6 p.m. Aug. 12 in the parking lot of the motel, 2350 W. Obispo Ave. Officers found a woman with gunshot wounds. She died at a hospital, police said.

“Officers learned that the victim and her husband had been living at the extended stay, as was the male subject, who occupied a nearby room,” a Gilbert Police Department release stated.

“Preliminary information indicates that the shooting occurred as the couple returned to the motel when the subject allegedly exited his room and opened fire.”

The man suspected of shooting the woman returned to a room at the motel where he barricaded himself by the time officers arrived.

Police negotiators established communication with the suspect who, after about 30 minutes, exited the room voluntarily and was taken into custody without incident, police said.

An investigation is underway.
