Gilbert officials outline long-term infrastructure funding gap

Gilbert officials say the town is approaching a critical transition point for infrastructure, with billions of dollars in identified transportation needs and limited funding capacity once existing bond dollars are fully committed.

Gilbert’s current $515 million transportation bond, approved by voters in 2021, is moving from design into construction — the phase where costs accelerate quickly and remaining capacity disappears, staff said.

Officials said the town has identified 96 transportation projects that have no funding source, representing about $1.3 billion in unmet need after accounting for outside and dedicated funding streams. Those projects range from road widening and intersection improvements to rehabilitation of older streets and expansion of non-motorized infrastructure.
