An armed man was shot and killed Wednesday night by Gilbert police officers, authorities said.
The shooting occurred about 6 p.m. June 11 near Lindsay and Guadalupe roads where officers responded to a welfare check request concerning a man who was slumped over inside his car, police said.
The officers attempted to contact the man, and the driver “acknowledged the officers who were attempting to have him exit the vehicle. Shortly afterwards, at about 6:04 p.m., the man presented a firearm, and an officer-involved shooting occurred," Gilbert police Sgt. Lorenzo Teruya said.
Both officers fired their weapons, police said.
The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The two officers involved in the shooting were not injured, police said. The Mesa Police Department is investigating as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.
