Gilbert mayor bringing rail ordinance back to council

Less than two weeks after an anti-rail ordinance failed at Gilbert Town Council, Mayor Brigette Peterson has placed a new proposed ordinance on the March 7 council agenda.

The proposed ordinance prohibits the town from charging a new fee for construction, maintenance or repair of rail lines or trains or from assessing a new tax without a voter referendum to do the same. But it will allow Gilbert to be involved in discussions if a regional commuter rail that goes through Gilbert is planned.

“If it comes through Gilbert, it's going to cause different situations, and we need to know what we're looking at,” Peterson said about her reasoning for introducing a new proposal.
