Gilbert council dismisses three ethics complaints, lets one move forward

Complaint from residents against mayor to get own investigation

Gilbert Town Council dismissed ethics complaints against three of its members Tuesday, but voted to allow an investigation of another complaint against Mayor Brigette Peterson to move forward.

Council voted 6-0 at its regular meeting to accept four reports from independent investigator Kenneth Fields, all of which concluded that no ethics violation had occurred: a joint complaint from resident Maureen Hoppe against council members Jim Torgeson and Bobbi Buchli, which Fields handled in separate reports; one against Torgeson from Peterson; and one against Peterson from Council Member Chuck Bongiovanni.

However, a complaint against Peterson from residents Brandon Ryff and Ryan Handelsman will be assigned to an investigator, though Town Attorney Christopher Payne had recommended to council that it not be. Council voted 4-1 to allow the investigation with Peterson abstaining and Scott Anderson voting in dissent.
