Gilbert council approves utility rate hikes amid Colorado River risks

Gilbert Town Council approved increases to water, solid waste and recycling rates Feb. 17 after a lengthy discussion dominated by warnings about potential Colorado River cuts and the cost of maintaining critical infrastructure.

Water rates drew the most debate.

On a 4-3 vote, council approved Option A — a 25% water rate increase to begin in April — with Vice Mayor Chuck Bongiovanni and council members Jim Torgeson and Monte Lyons dissenting, preferring Option E, which had 14% increases over the next two years.
