Gilbert council approves rezoning for Target at Higley and Ocotillo

Retailer faced significant neighborhood opposition

After months of debate, neighborhood meetings, petitions and delayed hearings, Gilbert Town Council approved a rezoning request that clears the way for a Target-anchored retail center at the southeast corner of Higley and Ocotillo roads.

The council voted 4-3 May 19 to approve the request, with Vice Mayor Chuck Bongiovanni and council members Bobbi Buchli and Jim Torgeson dissenting.

The rezoning changes the approximately 16-acre site from shopping center zoning to general commercial zoning, allowing for a single user larger than 75,000 square feet.
