Gilbert apologizes for rating residents’ 'vocal level'

The town of Gilbert apologized Wednesday for a document that rated residents living along a proposed Ocotillo Road widening project for their “vocal level” in opposing the project.

The document came to light Tuesday, Feb. 21, when Maricopa County island resident Rich Robertson presented it to council during a scheduled discussion of the project. The spreadsheet document shows the affected homeowners, their parcel and address, notes on where the landowner stands with the project and a vocal level of 1-4, with 1 being the most vocal.

“The town of Gilbert has created effectively an enemies list,” Robertson said. “Why are we as residents who are trying to exercise our rights being ranked by your staff to on how compliant we are with you? This is, I suspect, not how the council really wants its residents to be treated. I think it’s outrageous.”
