GCU names 1st female athletics director

Jamie Boggs has had interim job for two years

After serving as the interim vice president of athletics for Grand Canyon University for the past two years, Jamie Boggs is taking the reins on a more permanent basis.

GCU announced Ms. Boggs as its new athletics director at a live press conference on Monday. She said she accepted the official position to oversee the university’s 21 sports teams just one week ago, becoming the first woman and first woman of color to have the job. She previously spent time in the compliance department of Duke University — a perfect fit for her law degree — and the athletics department at Georgia State University.

“In her time as interim athletic director, Jamie has done an outstanding job,” GCU President Brian Mueller said in a prepared statement. “Our programs and athletes have flourished athletically, academically and spiritually. Most importantly she has integrated the athletic department into the culture and purpose of the institution. Her promotion to vice president of athletics has been earned by her performance, and we are grateful for her accepting this position.”
