Fun in the sun for charities

Local club hosts charity event

A Sun City West club made the decision to pivot to ensure compliance and as a result, community charities will benefit.

With more than 1,500 club members, the Sun City West Pickleball Club focuses on giving to the surrounding community. Through the pandemic, the sport of pickleball has grown and, according to club member Ken Holtz, the sport grew 22% nationwide.

This is the 11th year for the Fun In The Sun Pickleball Tournament, which attracts more than 500 players from various places. Previously, the event was used as a club fundraiser, but Holtz said the change was made to turn the event into a charitable endeavor to avoid any compliance issues with the state of Arizona. This event has 150 volunteers and took six months to plan. Through the past six years $116,000 was raised to go to charities in Sun City West through the Charity Ball Drop.
