Fugitive who fled to Mexico sentenced to 18 years for Phoenix murder

A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder for the 2022 death of a man in a bar parking lot near 51st Avenue and West McDowell Road in Phoenix.

Antonio Rios received 18 years for killing Jose Juan Lopez in June 2022, according to a Maricopa County Attorney’s Office release.

Rios shot and killed Lopez following an argument as the bar was closing, and Rios tried to convince a woman to leave with him. Lopez, who was a friend of the woman, intervened and told Rios to leave her alone. Rios removed a handgun from his vehicle and fired toward Lopez and the woman, authorities said.
