Fry's settles for $120K for denying deaf employee an interpreter at Surprise store

Fry’s Food and Drug Stores agreed to a $120,000 settlement for the employee of a Surprise store who was denied a sign language interpreter and ultimately fired from their job.

The settlement, announced by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, was the result of a lawsuit brought by the office's Arizona Civil Rights Division for the store failing to meet accommodations.

The case involves a deaf employee, whose name was redacted from the consent decree, who had worked as a grocery clerk at the story at 15218 N. Cotton Lane starting around May 2009. The employee had been born deaf and their primary language was American Sign Language.
