From heartbreak to hope: Gilbert father turns son's memory into Million Mile Challenge

The first steps were never really about Montana.

They were about a father searching for somewhere to carry grief that had nowhere else to go.

Nearly two decades after Barry Adkins set out from Gilbert on foot with his son Kevin's ashes in his backpack, the miles are still adding up. What began as a 1,400-mile walk has evolved into the Million Mile Challenge, an effort to invite people across the country to walk for loved ones affected by addiction while sharing stories they often keep to themselves.
